THE PREMISE CHEAP TRANSPORTATION, HONESTLY DOCUMENTED
Can cheap still be
dependable?
I picked up this running, driving and surprisingly complete 2005 Ford Freestyle for just $700. The goal is not a show-car restoration. It is to spend carefully, repair what matters and find out whether an unwanted auction car can become clean, comfortable and trustworthy enough for real daily life.
That means commuting more than 100 miles a day, handling trips around town and eventually taking on road trips—while keeping an honest record of the work, the failures and the actual cost.
EPISODE 01 CLEANUP, INSPECTION & THE FIRST SURPRISE
I bought a $700 car.
What did we actually get?
What we tackle
- Wash away years of exterior growth and neglect
- Deep-clean the unusually unpleasant interior
- Inventory what works, what does not and what is missing
- Establish a realistic baseline before spending money
What we discover
There is more going on than the condition first suggests. A fuel-related problem becomes the next priority—and the subject of episode two.
RUNNING TOTAL THE BUDGET LEDGER
No “just had it lying around” math.
The car’s purchase price and every project expense will live here as the series develops. Labor is DIY unless noted otherwise.
